Pink Floyd's The Wall

The Wall

The Wall poster

The Wall is one of Pink Floyd’s most famous and recognizable albums, selling an estimated 30 million copies worldwide. Released in 1979, the concept album was recorded at four different studios over an eight-month period. Critics and fans alike acclaimed The Wall as one of the group's greatest albums.

The Wall was a major album for the group as it featured 26 songs with vocals – nearly as many as all previous Pink Floyd albums combined. It reached the top spot on the Billboard album chart in January 1980 and stayed there for 15 weeks. After this phenomenal success, the group proved their staying power as the album spent another two years on the Billboard chart.

The album’s success was followed by an elaborate stage show. The concert version of Pink Floyd’s The Wall was only presented in a handful of cities. The show was so grandiose and complex that it was impossible to treat it as an average tour. The performance involved building a giant wall across the stage between the band and the audience, as well as incorporating the usual Pink Floyd props, such as giant screens, flying pigs and pyrotechnics. It was also turned into a full-length film.

The Wall was Roger Waters' crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. He wrote and sung nearly all of the songs on the album that detailed the rise and fall of a rock star. It was based on Roger’s own experiences and the tendencies he observed in people around him.

The Wall posterBy the time the album was recorded, Waters had tightened his grip on the band and demanded near-complete artistic control. As a result, the other band members' input was kept to a minimum, thereby creating personal tensions among the group. This was also the last studio Pink Floyd album to feature Richard Wright until his return in 1987.

The album’s story revolves around a fictional character named Pink Floyd who suffers in isolation as he is beaten down by society throughout his life. He deals with this problem by building a psychological wall (as portrayed on the album cover). The wall grows in size as various parts of his life spin out of control. Every song describes a different chapter in his life. Although Pink eventually finishes building his wall, in the end, he slowly goes insane behind it, and the wall comes tumbling down.

Pink Floyd’s The Wall is one of the greatest albums of all times. It has become synonymous with the band as it continues to seduce fans with its captivating sounds. Contrary to the song, The Wall isn’t just another brick in the wall.
